To my elders,
Yesterday was election day in the Great White North. Which lead to some, well, weird results (NDP sweeping Quebec to become the official opposition, obliterating the Bloc and the Liberals). But really, this election ended with a gouvernement majoritaire pour M. Harper. Sad face. Which is not quite as weird as it is... stupid. And here's why: this election was called because the minority Harper government was found in contempt of parliament. But apparently "the people" don't care about those nit-picky technical government things. Representational democracy reigns, popular vote don't mean a heck of a lot, and no one actually pays attention to day to day politics. So, do I believe in democracy? Sort of. But this isn't really democracy. This is more like: vote for a guy (note: gender neutral use of the word "guy"), if that guy wins his party gets a seat and the party with the most seats makes their leader the PM. Do people vote for leaders? not really. Do people vote about issues? not really. Does it actually make sense that social and economic views are conflated? again, NOT REALLY. So I, like most Canadians, am bad at democracy (read: do not pay attentionto politics, do nothing about it, complain a lot, and vote. Side bar: voting only barely par for the course). I am now in the popular percentage majority and the representational minority. So what is a girl to do? Make a Post Election Depression Playlist. Because I need something to cheer me up.
